Salary £13.64 per hour.About UsWelwyn Hatfield Museum Service exists to record, collect, conserve, exhibit and interpret the archaeology and history of the Welwyn Hatfield Borough for the benefit of the public. Our collections consist of archaeology and local history objects including photographs, artworks and archival material.The Museum Services has two sites; Mill Green Museum (an 18th Century restored working watermill) and Welwyn Roman Baths (a 3rd Century ancient scheduled monument) and we welcome visitors to both.Purpose of the roleThe Casual Miller serves as an important member of the museum team, supporting school visits and regular opening at Mill Green Museum by operating, caring for and sharing information about the mill. Working closely with our Millers, the Casual Miller will have the opportunity to help mill flour on our historic mill and share information about the mill with school groups and the public.Milling Volunteer tasks may include: Leading school visits to the mill, sharing information about the mill and operating the millWorking with our millers, undertaking some maintenance of the millMilling grain and packing flourAssisting the Millers to keep the mill area cleanSupporting with occasional weekend cover for opening to the general publicGeneral site maintenance and technical support The role would suit someone who:Has experience or an interest in milling or heritage craftsIs comfortable with physical activity including kneeling, lifting and working at heightsEnjoys working as part of a teamIs looking to learn a traditional skill from our experienced and friendly millersEnjoys communicating information with students and the publicThe postholder will have a full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle. As this role involves working with children, a DBS check will also be required.
